THE VIRGINITY TRADE

‘Cambodia: The Virginity Trade’ is the compelling and utterly alarming account of the lives of girls and women affected by the virginity trade that exists in Cambodia today.

Many Asian men believe that obtaining a virgin girl for sex will grant them extra health and luck. Subsequently, there is a huge demand for young Cambodian girls, and the demand feeds the country’s sex industry. Cambodia: The Virginity Trade documents all sides of this nightmarish story of Cambodian girls in crisis.

Intimate and revealing interviews are held with the men who buy the virginity of young girls, politicians, the police, senior NGO’s and the victims themselves.

Through intimate and revealing interviews, men explain why sex with virgins is so important to them. We hear the stories of those whose lives have been ruined by the virginity trade, and speak to politicians, the police and representatives from NGOs. Can anything be done to end the plight of these girls?

This documentary shows that not all of the clients that come to the brothels are Westerners, but are mostly Cambodians. Cambodia has a huge problem with human trafficking and sex slavery, and films like this need to be watched so that more people are informed of what is the problem and the reasons behind it. The girls who are interviewed give powerful and moving testimonies, and this is a film that is not to be missed.

THE GIRLS OF PHNOM PENH

Every day in Cambodia, South East Asia, families sell their daughters into the highly lucrative sex trade. Sex with a virgin girl can be worth as much as twelve hundred US dollars to an Asian man.

Srey Leak (16), Me Nea (17) and Cheata (17) are all victims of the virginity trade. They met as karaoke girls at the ‘Soul’ club in Phnom Penh. ‘The Girls Of Phnom Penh’ examines in intimate detail the complex relationship these girls have with their mothers, who sold them.

The film also tells the story of the incredible friendship between Srey Leak, Me Nea and Cheata. Together these girls are like sisters united against the world and all the horrors it throws at them. They face their brutal existence with courage and humour.

Their story is one of sisterhood through adversity; a friendship that offers each a very simple form of support as they struggle with balancing their childhood dreams and teenage expectations of life with the very adult lives they lead by night.
